Das erste Album, “Amethyst Rock Star” war ein Meilenstein, welches Underground Hiphop mit Streicherklängen, Griot, Drumnbass und Rock harmonisch vermengt, und mal wütende, aber immer gehaltvolle Texte, mal im Eiltempo oder auch sanft gesungen, enthält. Und jedes Mal, wenn Saul Williams was macht, macht er etwas total anderes, und so hat er sein drittes Album “The Inevitable Rise and Liberation Of Niggy Tardust” (2007) von Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) produzieren lassen. Noch rockigere und dazu industrielle Klänge sind darauf prominent vertreten. Der Schriftsteller, Schauspieler, Sänger, Rapper und Slam-Poet kann aber nicht lange ruhig bleiben, und so erscheint 2011 seine neuste Produktion, “Volcanic Sunlight”. Es ist ein poppigeres, tanzbareres Album. Er selbst sagt dazu im Dazed Magazine: “There is a lot of fun to be had when you try and fit as many words as you can within a three-minute song but there is also a lot of fun in trying to get that message across in three words, or better yet when the music can overpower the words and convey something really pure and perfect… It’s as simple as wanting to lift the spirits”. Written and recorded between Senegal, Reunion Island, Paris, Haiti, and New Orleans and New York, \u003Cstrong>Martyr Loser King\u003C\u002Fstrong> is a multimedia project that engages the digital dialogue between the 1st and 3rd Worlds, and the global street sounds that yoke the two. “In Senegal, I was buying iPhones for $20, Beats for $10, because they get all the influx from China, with no regulation,” Williams explains. “So everyone’s online. Everyone’s high tech.” He cites Beyoncé, Fredo Santana, and Haitian field recordings as musical inspirations for his self-produced 6th album, straining trap hi-hats and mbira strokes together for a nuanced, entirely original sound. “I’m just letting you know what I’m reading and seeing while I’m writing.
