sie mit den GYPSY QUEENS & KINGS den Dachstock beehrten!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Als “Mahala” bezeichnen die Roma von ihnen bewohnte Viertel einer Stadt, in denen sie abgeschieden von der Mehrheitsgesellschaft ihr Überleben organisieren und die eigene Kultur pflegen. “Raï” wiederum ist ein arabisches Wort, welches die heute in der Walachai ansässigen Roma vor langer Zeit auf ihrem Exodus aus Indien über Persien und Ägypten mit in ihren Wortschatz übernommen haben. Der Begriff ”raï” zeichnet jemanden als anerkannte und beliebte Autorität aus. “Banda” steht für ein Orchester aus verschiedenen Instrumenten (Geige, Trompete, Saxofon, Cymbalom, Percussion, Akkordeons) und ist grundsätzlich an kein Genre gebunden. Das Wort beschreibt weder eine Fanfare noch eine Folk Band, aber kann je nach Umständen genau diese oder jene Formation meinen.\u003Cbr \u002F>\nDie bekanntesten und begnadetsten Musiker Rumäniens stammen aus zwei unscheinbaren Dörfern. In Clejani, südwestlich von Bukarest gelegen, leben die Geiger, Cymbalom-Spieler, Bassisten und Akkordeonisten der berühmten Formation Taraf de Haidouks. Im Nordosten des Landes liegt Zece Prajini und dort trifft man auf die wahren Meister unter den Blechbläsern. Das entlegene Dorf in der Moldova ist Heimat der Fanfare Ciocarlia und wie Clejani weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus bekannt.\u003Cbr \u002F>\nWie könnte also die Besetzung für DIE Gypsy-Band schlechthin aussehen, welche Musiker könnten für eine Art Balkan-Ausgabe der Memphis Horns Schulter an Schulter mit der Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section stehen und an Kraft und Finesse, Groove und überschäumende Virtuosität keine Wünsche offen lassen? Die Antwort auf diese Frage liegt auf der Hand: in der Mahala Rai Banda (wörtlich übersetzt mit “Noble Band aus dem Ghetto”) haben Musiker aus Clejani und Zece Prajini zusammengefunden.\u003Cbr \u002F>\nDie Geschichte der Mahala Rai Banda begann Ende der 90’er in Bukarest, als der Geiger Aurel Ionita die Gruppe Rom Bengale aus der Taufe hob. Doch kaum waren die ersten Erfolge der Band verbucht, zerbrach sie auch schon aufgrund der Drogensucht einiger blutjunger Musiker. Nicht lange nach dieser bitteren Erfahrung stellte Aurel dann eine erste Besetzung der Mahala Rai Banda zusammen und das belgische Label Crammed Discs veröffentlichte in 2004 die vielbeachtete Debut-CD der Band.\u003Cbr \u002F>\nJetzt meldet sich die Mahala Rai Banda mit ihrer mitreißenden Mischung aus Oriental Pop, traditioneller rumänischer Musik, Rumba Catalan, Reggae und Manele endlich zurück. It’s easy, just bring together the musicians from Clejani and of Zece Prajini!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The story of Mahala Rai Banda begins at the end of the nineties with Aurel Ionita forming the group Rom Bengale in Bucharest. Their success had hardly begun – when this ensemble of young musicians was plagued and divided by addiction problems. Aurel then created the initial line-up of the Mahala Rai Banda – a name inspired by the Gypsy suburbs of the big Romanian cities – which released a CD on Crammed Discs in 2004.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Now the band is back with its mix of Romanian musical traditions, oriental pop, rumba Catalan, reggae and manele, the Roma pop with ambigious commercial success.
