Leaning into several layers of dance music, from metallic techno, angelic trance and squishy acid to cosmic bleep, Lolsnake (she/they) fuses a maelstrom of textures into their sets, stirring up heady atmospheres and hypnotic moods on the dance floor, forming a magnetic aesthetic of their own. A cerebral DJ, visual artist and founder of the queer platform and soon-to-be-label Weeeirdos, the Iraqi-American talent approaches her work with an open and curious mind, always finding ways to inject colour and charisma into the space she commands. In 2024 alone, the Berghain regular took their sound worldwide, playing in Bassiani Tbilisi, Phonox London, Blitz Munich, Nation of Gandwana, WHOLE festival and many more parties and festivals across Europe and the Americas. Guest mixes for publications and radio stations featured along the way, including Mixmag, DJ Mag, The Lot Radio, Spandau20 and Pornceptual. In 2023 Weeeirdos’ move from OHM to Säule, where the party has an ongoing residency. The parties are going strong happening every other month in the basement of Berghain. In December 2023 was the first Weeeirdos in Berghain on a Friday night with Daniel Avery b2b IMOGEN, Lolsnake b2b Nur Jaber, and LDS. Additionally in 2023, Boiler Room invited Lolsnake to host a Weeeirdos live stream from Berlin’s Nåpoleon Komplex — a dungeon-like space selected by Lolsnake — alongside Nur Jaber, Neri J, Clits and Vinvar. Springboarding from her experience as a booker for a live music venue in Berlin, Lolsnake launched Weeeirdos in 2017, where she made her first appearance as a DJ. Her initial aim was to merge disparate art and music forms, like spoken word, comedy, visual art, and live and electronic music under one roof. Weeeirdos soon morphed into a dance-led event, with early bookings including VTSS, Cera Khin, SPFDJ and Viscerale. While being taste-making, Weeeirdos was, and still is, an opportunity to arouse fun and freedom into the primarily dark, steely and occasionally pretentious aspects of the dance music scene. Interdisciplinary artists like Boys Noize, Ellen Allien, Chippy Nonstop, Parrish Smith, and Schacke have soundtracked the series in recent months. Iraqi by blood and California by birth, Lolsnake grew up in Oakland. With a musical education in the saxophone and clarinet and Bass Clarinet, her taste evolved into electronic music in her teens, dipping into Depeche Mode, Underworld, The Knife, and the Arabic tapes of Oum Kalthoum and Fairouz. Moving to Manchester in 2010 to study neuroscience, they immersed themselves in the UK scene and took a shine to the city’s lauded DIY rave circuit. Four years later, Lolsnake relocated to Berlin and attended as many queer parties as humanly possible, where they felt comfortable and at home. Coming up to ten years in Berlin, Lolsnake has chopped and changed her sound from fast and fiery rhythms to a shimmering constellation of techno, trance and beyond, punctuated by curveballs and mischievous motifs at just the right moments. With plans to bring Weeeirdos on a world tour, kickstart its eponymous record label, Lolsnake has proved to be a vibrant artist on the global scene and a leading example of what happens when one doesn’t follow the rules.
