Twin Tribes was formed in 2017 in Brownsville, Texas, a border town with a unique cultural blend that subtly influences their music. Luis Navarro and Joel Niño Jr. bonded over their shared love of post-punk and darkwave, deciding to create music that paid homage to the brooding, atmospheric sounds of the 1980s while adding their own modern twist. Despite coming from a region not typically associated with the goth or darkwave scene, they carved out a niche and quickly gained recognition within underground circles.
Their DIY approach played a crucial role in their early success. They self-released their debut album, Shadows (2018), which received praise for its haunting melodies and moody synth-driven sound. With songs like “Tower of Glass” and “Talisman,” the album established their signature style—brooding yet energetic, nostalgic yet fresh. Their sophomore release, Ceremony (2019), expanded on this foundation, featuring tracks like “Heart & Feather” and “Fantasmas,” which further explored themes of love, loss, and mysticism.
In 2024, Twin Tribes released their highly anticipated third album, Pendulum. This album marked an evolution in their sound, incorporating richer production, deeper atmospheric textures, and a heightened sense of emotional intensity. Post-Punk.com praised the album, stating, “The album seamlessly marries the Gothic with the romantic, dancing gracefully on the line dividing light from dark.” The album’s lead single, “Monolith,” became their fastest-growing hit, amassing over 15 million streams since its release. With its hypnotic rhythm and haunting melodies, “Monolith” captivated both longtime fans and new listeners, further cementing the band’s place in the modern darkwave movement. Other standout tracks, such as “Cauldron of Thorns” and “Sanctuary,” balance melancholic beauty with pulsating darkwave energy, while “Sangre de Oro” brings us their first full Spanish track, showing the band’s love for Rock en Español.
As their popularity grew, Twin Tribes became known for their intense, atmospheric live performances, often accompanied by fog, moody lighting, and a deep sense of emotional connection with their audience. They have toured extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, sharing stages with artists like She Past Away, Boy Harsher, and Lebanon Hanover.
Their rising prominence has led to multiple sold-out shows worldwide, including The Novo in Los Angeles, Fox Theater in Pomona, as well as Oslo Hackney in London and Lido in Berlin, highlighting their global impact on the darkwave and post-punk revival.
Despite their relatively short time in the scene, Twin Tribes has played a significant role in the modern darkwave resurgence, influencing newer acts while remaining true to their roots. Their music fuses melancholic beauty and driving post-punk energy, resonating with fans and accumulating 60+ million streams to date.
