Colourful, effervescent, and energetic, the Brazilian drum ‘n’ bass scene has given us some of the most distinctive production voices in the game. Including São Paulo’s Level 2 and DJ Chap or, as they’re known collectively, Alibi.
Of course, the V Recordings family of imprints has been intimately associated with the worldwide explosion of Brazilian DnB. And, it’s testament to Level 2’s skills that he was only a year into his production career when he caught the eye of label boss Bryan Gee. Releases on Liquid V and Chronic quickly demonstrated his versatility, proving him equally capable of creating laid-back melodic pieces or rough-hewn junglist tear-outs.
The other half of Alibi, DJ Chap, is an inveterate collaborator. Having made a name for himself with releases on labels like Innerground, Liquid V, and Chronic, his team-up with close neighbour Andrezz propelled him ever-further into the spotlight. Deep, harmony-focused, but always aimed straight at the dancefloor, Chap’s helped set the benchmark for contemporary Brazilian drum ‘n’ bass.
And now there’s Alibi. Drawing together the duo’s musicality, dancefloor energy, and boundary-stretching versatility, this team is one of the most exciting prospects in DnB. You’re just as likely to go hear them go dark and heavy as you are to taste that sunlit liquid flavour. Since they debuted as a combo in 2015, huge releases like “The Hornet EP”, “Feelings” and their weighty contribution to Coppa’s album “Architects” have demonstrated their ability to reach out to every corner of the genre.
2018 sees them cement their position even further with the release of the debut Alibi album. Weaving together threads from the duo’s shared funk, soul, reggae, and hip hop influences with the drum ‘n’ bass tutelage of shared heroes like S.P.Y., Calibre, Marcus Intalex, and D-Bridge, this is set to be the most complete statement of their musical vision so far.
With hundreds of thousands of streams, a jet-lag-defying schedule of international deejay bookings, and accolades and support from DnB’s glitterati, right now we’re witnessing Alibi going stratospheric. Time to get on board.
