Lady Leshurr (born Melesha O’Garro on June 28th, 1990) is a British rapper, singer-songwriter, and record producer from Birmingham, England. She first began to get noticed for her Queen’s Speech series of freestyle rap videos in 2012, which have been viewed over 40 million times. She continues to be a prominent figure in UK rap with her unique voice and style.
Born and raised in Birmingham, England, Lady Leshurr was always surrounded by music growing up. Her father was a DJ and she was exposed to styles such as hip hop, reggae and soul. After spending some time in college studying music technology and audio engineering, she began to make her own music.
Career
In 2012, Lady Leshurr released her first mixtape titled Unleshured which caught the attention of BBC Radio 1Xtra and BBC Radio 1. This led to her Queen’s Speech series of freestyle rap videos that same year which garnered millions of views and helped launch her career, in 2015. Her standout single, Queen’s Speech 4, was called “brilliant” and “2015’s crowning freestyle” by Spin and got airplay in the UK and attention worldwide. She has since released four more mixtapes as well as multiple singles and EPs. In 2020 she was nominated for Best Female Artist at the MOBO Awards.
Lady Leshurr has collaborated with many artists including JME, Swarmz, Pa Salieu and more. She has also been featured on the BBC Radio 1Xtra Power List for 2019. In 2020 she collaborated with Amazon Music for their Summer Of Music campaign.
