Jagged CityUSA
Jagged City is the creative collaboration between Jake Woodruff (Defeater, Dreamtigers, Aisha Burns) and Carlos Torres (Explosions in the Sky, Cross Control). Taking on an immediate, raw approach to instrumental post-rock, Jagged City are both enchantingly melodious and fiercely explosive.
What started as a fun, cross-continental art project quickly gained momentum through rounds of collaboration, compositional work and drum parts with David Haik (Pianos Become the Teeth). When the duo decided it was time to record, David had a scheduling conflict, so began the search for a drummer as well as a studio. Enter Urian Hackney (Iggy Pop, Death, The Armed, Rough Francis), who brought his energy and talent to the songs as both drummer and engineer.
Jake and Urian tracked what would become ‘There Are More of Us, Always’ in two short days at Urian’s studio, The Box in Burlington, VT. In these sessions the atmosphere was electric. Carlos then recorded bass in LA with Explosions in the Sky bandmate, Michael James. Jake recorded additional guitars at home, and Takaakira Goto (Mono) contributed guitars to the closing track. Urian mixed the album, and Will Killingsworth (Dead Air Studios, Orchid, Corrode, Longings) mastered it.
In these times where confusion and isolation reign, Jagged City invites you to remember that creative collaboration is a powerful healing element. Taking the band name from one of our generation’s literary lights, Hanif Abdurraqib’s latest book, the eclectic collection of songs that make up ‘There Are More of Us, Always’ are the first from this project.
